With soaring fuel costs, and the job market on the down swing, fewer and fewer folks are taking to planes or cars for family vacations. Where are they going then? How are they relieving the workplace stress? They are creating backyard vacations. “Staycations” is another term coined for this phenomenon. But, you might say, there is only grass, a couple of trees and maybe a burned out fire pit back there. What can my family do to substitute for a real-life full blown vacation?

Create a Drive In Movie Theater

Doing anything under the stars is fun. But watching a movie? Kids today have no idea about drive-ins because there are only a handful left around. If mosquitoes or other bugs are a nuisance, purchase some perimeter bug spray and light citronella tiki torches. Create movie-theater style seating with outdoor chairs (including lounge chairs for mom and dad), run an extension cord out to a television and pop in a movie. Pop some popcorn, grab an ice chest of soda and it feels like you’re miles from home. If weather is a threat, erect a tent and move the theater inside the tent. This is just one of many backyard vacations ideas.

Create Your own Campsite

Can’t afford to drive to the lake, or rent an RV? Don’t have a tent? Create a tent by running thick rope or string between trees, then drape a large tarp or canvas over the clothesline. Bring out the air mattresses or just sleep on the ground. Bring plenty of comforting blankets and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the outdoors, in your own backyard.

Create a Romantic Secret Garden

The beauty of our environment has a refreshing, calming effect on our lives. Taking the time create a beautiful, fragrant garden that can be enjoyed on a daily basis, is one of the best ways to spend money not already spent on a big jet-plane vacation. Research what flowers and plants work best in your own geographical location, then set to planting them. Do you want to attract hummingbirds and butterflies? Different plants and flowers will have this effect. Place a park bench somewhere within the garden to sit and enjoy the sights and sounds, and perhaps a glass of champagne or two with your partner.

Install a Swimming Pool

We travel long distances to stay at hotels that offer pools. Why not just put one in your own backyard? Installing a pool will help create one of the most entertaining backyard vacations possible. Above or inground is up to you, expect a wide range of difference in cost, and structure stability. Maintenance is a key here too, be prepared for many hours in maintaining the pool, but if it is used a lot, and is a good focal point for friend gatherings, than it is worth it.

Other Water Features

Many people don’t care for pools in their backyard, or flat out don’t have the space or money to install them. There are other ways to bring water into your backyard such as building Koi fish ponds, building small waterfalls and installing fountains and bird baths. Backyard vacations come to life with smart and exciting landscaping around these areas that enhance their beauty, not to mention the enjoyment you will reap from your efforts.

Summer is fast approaching and it is about time to plan for your next vacation. I am sure everyone of us would like to save money from their travel expenses.

Well, here are 10 tips I would like to share with you:(Importance is not according to the position)

 1. Plan your itinerary at least one month ahead. In this way, advance booking for your airline tickets and Hotel bookings will be cheaper.

 2. Group bookings is another way of reducing your travel expenses.

 3. Google search is very helpful. It can give you many ideas and information on the location where you can go.

 4. Look for Discount Coupons.

 5. Subscribe to membership club where thousands of shop owners and companies are offering excellent club membership discounts.

 6. Read from Ezine Articles about cheap travel.

 7. Subscribe to blogs. Get new ideas from the experiences of others.

 8. Bring only those things that you will need. If you are traveling by car, total car weight load can save gasoline expenses especially for a long drive.

 9. Make sure you bring along with you your first aid kits.

 10. Do not forget your medications and important contact address and phone numbers in case of emergency.

As a summary, plan your trip in advance, observe traffic rules and safety all the time. Bring ID and do not forget your membership discount card. Take care not to loose your valuables and eat moderately.

That is it. Enjoy!

When I was growing up, the only vacations we took were trips to visit relatives. I got so tired of that, and I decided then and there that I would make it a point, once I was able, to take a vacation each year and stay in a hotel. No more spending the vacation at the relatives’ house. Now don’t get me wrong, I love my family, but on a vacation I just want the luxury of a nice hotel.

I encountered my first stumbling block when I took a look at my bank account. Not a lot of extra money for an extravagant trip! So I set about gathering a list of cheap travel destinations. If you do a little research, there are quite a few ways to take a vacation and not spend huge amounts of money. For example, I’ve always wanted to visit Tennessee as it looks so beautiful in photos. So for anyone who would like to visit Nashville on a budget, here are a few things to do and places to eat that won’t cost you a leg and an arm.

For a fun snack while you are out and about, stop in at Bobbie’s Dairy Dip at 5301 Charlotte Avenue. This is a classic fifties-type walk-up ice cream shop that not only sells absolutely yummy ice cream but also wonderful 100% certified Angus beef and Belgian style potatoes,

Stop in at the Davis-Kidd Booksellers and Cafe which offers story time for the kids, book club discussions, and many other book-related events. Locals stop by for dinner, espresso, and dessert. The store’s selection of magazines is said to be unmatched. Head over to the bookstore’s bistro on Sundays for their continental breakfast from 10 a.m. to noon.If you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet a best-selling author as they often appear to read and to sign their latest works.

Visit the First Center for the Visual Arts which hosts a spectacular array of art from around the world. This is a family-friendly non-traditional museum which the whole family will enjoy. One of the most popular areas of the center is the ArtQuest Gallery with activities for all ages. There are 20 interactive stations where you can do such things as make a print, paint your own original watercolor, create a sculpture, and more. There is also a gift shop and cafe. This is truly a wonderful place to spend a few hours on your trip to Nashville.

For another great museum stop, try the Tennessee State Museum. Some consider it the best museum in Nashville, and there is free admission too.

Go for a hike at the Radnor Lake State Natural Area. Radnor Lake is a nature sanctuary, so the trails are strictly used for hiking and wildlife observation. Wildlife abounds, and you can see geese, herons, salamanders, coots, and all manner of other interesting animals.

Many places offer horseback riding, which is a fun way to enjoy the scenery of this very pretty area.

The Pancake Pantry is quite popular and a reported celebrity hotspot. However, if you would like to avoid the lines which will be around the block for breakfast, you can find the same type of meal at IHOP or Bob Evans.

Try the Sub Stop for lunch. I’ve heard from some of the locals that they have what is considered the best sandwiches in town, and here’s a tip. You will see celebrities stopping in here for lunch on a regular basis.

Travel cheap to Nashville or find other cheap travel destinations and lots more travel tips. The Cheap Traveler will help you find super cheap airfares.

I’ve been to Vegas quite a few times and there’s just something about this city that gets the adrenaline going. It’s not hard to believe this is one of the most exciting tourist destinations in the world. From the moment you step off the plane, even the airport is exciting. With the slot machines pinging and the many shops, it just seems brighter somehow.

From there it is a short taxi or shuttle ride over to the strip where, if you have never seen the sight before, you will be amazed. If you arrive at night you’ll be greeted by extravagant neon signs, colorful mega-resorts that tower above the strip, moving walkways, and lots of people no matter the time of day or night.

You’ll probably notice a lot of signs along the strip advertising buffets and lots of dinner and lunch specials. Take note of these if you would like to save some money on food, as there are many for you to choose from. Now, I will not say this will going to be the absolute best, top-notch food you have ever eaten, but for a quick lunch while you are out and about seeing the sights, you can save quite a bit and then spend a little more on a nice dinner. Do a little research on the casino restaurants, as these resorts offer some of the finest dining you will find anywhere. Well worth a little splurge after saving on your breakfast and lunch earlier.

When you check into your hotel, ask if they have any coupon books available. Or if you think about it when you make your reservations, you can ask at that time. Often you can find a lot of good savings in these little books like two-for-one meals, discounts on shows, and dinner coupons.

Another example of how you can save money in Vegas: Each of the beautiful hotel resorts have free things you can do. For example, Bellagio has an amazing and just breathtaking lobby, so bring your camera and enjoy. They also have the astounding world famous fountain show out front which can be seen from all over. I never tire of this show. Be sure to see it at night as well. Caesars Palace has the Forum Shops and plenty of other freebies, Bally’s has the water, sound, and light show, Mirage has the white tigers and erupting volcano (and much more), Venetian has the Grand Canal Shoppes, the canal and gondolas. That is to name just a few, but each hotel has lots you can do for free or very cheap.

This city is simply great for people watching. Photo spots abound so don’t forget your camera.

These ideas are really just a tiny drop in the bucket of all the ways you can find to travel cheap to Las Vegas and spend a lot less than you ever thought possible. So if you get the chance, don’t miss this very exciting and really amazing city.

Planning a trip to Vegas? Find the lowest airline fares and lots more travel tips. The Cheap Traveler will help you find absolutely cheapest airfares!

Sorry to use the tired old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ but, as many people have found out to their detriment, it is especially true when it comes to travel insurance. It’s all too easy to take the first policy you’re offered rather than have to sift through policy details and comparisons to understand exactly what you’re getting. Trying to work out insurance jargon is about as much fun as an advanced level jigsaw puzzle with a lot of blue sky.

It has become a way of life for pale, sun-deprived Brits desperate for sunshine to trudge through the rain to their local travel agent and book a package holiday. Why not? After all, the sun provides you with a healthy dose of Vitamin D, and everyone knows that vitamins are good for you! (Just don’t forget to slap on the sunscreen to help prevent skin cancer).

Many travel agents and tour operators will try to sell you travel insurance at the same time as the holiday, or throw the insurance in free or for a ‘little extra’. How many people get past the glossy brochures full of tanned bodies lying on sun-kissed, palm fringed beaches to read the small print of the insurance policy? By that stage you are mentally already in your swimsuit and diving into that warm, azure blue water.

Travel insurance is often advertised by banks, credit card companies, chemists, supermarkets, coach companies, airlines, retail shops and the Post Office. On the surface it may seem adequate, but open the box and look a little deeper inside. Compare the levels of cover they offer against a good, comprehensive, policy and you’ll find that pieces of the puzzle may be missing. They are often the vital corner pieces too! For example, you may find there’s no cover for lost luggage, or the cover only extends to excursions organized by their tour operator or rep.

Once you reach your destination, would you stop to consider the consequences of going off to a local water park for some fun on the water slides, a sightseeing coach trip, or an elephant ride? When the carefree holiday spirit has you in its grip it’s likely you’ll do all sorts of activities on a whim. What if you sustained an injury at the water park, the coach crashed, or you fell off the elephant? It would be a very unwelcome shock and perhaps an unhappy end to your holiday to discover too late that the insurance your travel agent sold you only covered activities which had been arranged by your travel rep. They would put the lid back on the holiday jigsaw and you’d be left puzzling how to pick up the pieces and pay the bills!

Travel insurance need not be expensive, so it’s important to make sure you get the right cover for your needs. It’s a waste of money to take out more insurance cover than you need. If you only plan to take one trip to France in a year, then a single trip policy will be the one for you. If you are planning a short trip to Spain and then a ski trip later in the year you’d save money by purchasing a multi-trip policy and adding extra cover for skiing and winter sports. If you have pre-existing medical conditions you must declare them and it might cost a bit more, but it is better to be totally honest and ensure you will be covered if there are problems. If you have to make a claim and it comes to light that you have not been honest in any aspect of your application then your entire claim could be invalidated!

Next time you are at your travel agents office caught up in the excitement of booking your trip; don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. You might think it’s easier to take care of the holiday and insurance all at once. That way you can forget about the boring parts and get on with shopping and packing for your holiday. Instead, give the offer of free insurance some thinking time, obtain quotes from reputable travel insurance companies and do a comparison. For example, check to see whether the free policy includes personal liability and legal expenses. They often don’t!

This problem will no longer be an issue after January 1, 2009. The government’s financial watchdog, the Financial Services Authority (FSA), will thereafter require that any company selling travel insurance be FSA-regulated. In the meantime, be on your guard. Banks may be FSA-regulated as far as their banking business, but until the new rule takes effect they are not required to comply with the FSA regulations to sell travel insurance! A stand-alone travel insurance company has to be regulated and you have the benefit of the ombudsman if their services fail you in any way.

Just like a jigsaw puzzle, your dream holiday should contain everything you see in the picture on the box. If there are missing pieces or it all falls apart, you’ll need a good travel insurance policy and someone to call upon for help. Don’t risk spoiling your holiday and lamenting ‘Now, I know why you were so cheap!’

Cheap travel can be a reality these days, without compromising on those things that are important. If spending $500 for a flight is simply too much - don’t worry, as nowadays air travel has never been cheaper, and the low-cost companies are working to your advantage! Finding budget air travel doesn’t have to mean a big hunt around anymore, and cheap travel fares invade you from everywhere - from online travel; from tour operators’ organized charters and from the budget or low cost airlines.

International travel is affordable today for everyone, short-haul and even long-haul, as being pampered in an exotic destination is a dream come true for more and more people without a fortune to burn. Wondering what is a low-cost airline and why the budget travel fares? Many features make a difference from the traditional carriers, but the result, cheap travel fares, makes these companies a real knock-off!

Budget air travel means:

- online sales

- use of the secondary city airports

- no free food and beverages

- no international offices

Many “No’s”, but a big “Yes” for your long-dreamed holiday! Isn’t it great? Still, with so many offers for budget air travel, it might get a bit dizzying to choose the perfect one. With a little bit of investigation, the cheap travel deals will be no longer a secret! Take your travel agency advice, or simply do your own research online. You only have to be flexible, as the more adaptable your travel plans are, the more budget travel deals you will find. Avoid flying on weekends - the secret of the cheapest fares are leaving midweek and stay through Saturday. And remember, the most unpopular travel hours, such as late night or early morning, reveal for you the real cheap air travel fares.

Whether you plan for a longer holiday, or simply a weekend break, think smart and always look out for the travel package deals. Booking for both the flight ticket and the accommodation and/or the car rental can sometimes save you big bucks. Still, compare the travel package rate with the separate services costs, and choose the best option. After your research is done and your travel decision is made, don’t forget to ask about the hidden taxes and fees. Oftentimes, the “ideal” cheap travel deal hides these kinds of surprises that might add $100 or more to your costs. Although it may take a bit of time to shop around for budget travel deals, it sure is time worth spending if it means having more money for enjoying your holiday experience!
